The Great Fox is the Star Fox Team's base of operations as well as a competent battleship. It is capable of holding the team's Arwings, the Landmaster, and the Blue Marine, as well as launching them into apparently any combat situation. Aside from this considerably powerful and versatile arsenal of vehicles, the Great Fox itself carries a twin-linked laser cannon and is supervised by ROB 64, an advanced robot. It is known to be unwieldy, as evidenced by the Ambush of Sector Z in the Lylat Wars.

The Great Fox (グレートフォックス) is a fictional space aircraft carrier / battleship used in the Star Fox series of video games as the mothership of the Star Fox team. It was officially introduced in Star Fox 64 as the base of operations of the team when in space.
It was originally built per request by James McCloud who hired Space Dynamics Co. to construct it which he paid for with an 80 year loan. The Star Fox team still use the money they earn from mercenary missions to repay this loan.

According to the Star Fox 64 Player's guide, James McCloud placed the order to Space Dynamics to build the original Great Fox, which is described as a Dreadnought-class space battleship. The ship was not cheap, as James had to take out an eighty-year loan. Unfortunately, James disappeared at Venom before completion.
The Great Fox was destroyed in Star Fox: Assault, and would be replaced with another ship of the same name in Star Fox Command.

The Great Fox was still relatively new when James' only son Fox McCloud, having re-formed the Star Fox Team following his father's apparent death, took ownership of the ship. The Great Fox was originally used as a carrier & repair facility for the team's Arwings, Landmaster, and Blue Marine, as well as acting in a logistical capacity by transferring supplies to the combat zone when needed. In terms of combat, the Great Fox used its powerful weapon systems (in the form of 2 powerful laser cannons) to aid the squadron's progression during missions, blowing apart asteroids and causing serious damage to massive battleships (such as the Venomian battleships that guard the Area 6 access corridor to Venom). The ship's own defenses allow it to survive in a variety of environments, allowing it to be able to enter a planetary atmosphere, and land on planet-side spaceports, as well as having a limited aquatic capability (e.g. on Aquas, where it half-submerged itself to deploy the Blue Marines).
The ship's major assignment was first breaking the invasion of Corneria by the Venomian Army, and then re-capturing the occupied territories of the Lylat System, and ultimately invading Venom itself, where Andross was defeated by Fox.

The idea of Star Fox having a mothership was started in the unreleased Star Fox 2. The mothership, though nameless, slightly resembled the Great Fox, though there are glaringly obvious differences such as the side-mounted docking bays. It is most likely that this mothership design was inspired by the Pegasus-class assault carrier from Mobile Suit Gundam.

Great Fox in Star Fox 64
Star Fox: Assault
The Great Fox is relatively new at the time of its official debut in Star Fox 64. The primary purpose of the ship is that of a carrier and repair facility for the team’s Arwings. In addition, it also acts in a logistical capacity when needed to transfer supplies to the combat zone. The ship also possesses weapon systems in the form of two powerful laser cannons that can fire in a limited arc ahead of it, and are powerful enough to blow apart asteroids and seriously damage the massive Venomian battleships that guard the Area 6 access corridor to Venom.
With the money received by General Pepper for successfully saving Sauria from destruction and the Lylat system from devastation, the team were able to overhaul the Great Fox. It now appeared as a much sleeker and cleaner looking ship, inside and out, and also added new equipment. This included a long-range transfer system that can send Arwings and Landmasters to a planet's surface when needed, though the team's leader Fox McCloud indicated that it had poor targeting systems.

In addition, the vessel can survive in a variety of environments. The Great Fox is able to enter a planetary atmosphere and even land at a planet-side spaceport. Furthermore, it has a limited aquatic capability as shown during the mission to Aquas where it is seen drifting half-submerged in the ocean to deploy the Blue Marine.
The ship served the team well, allowing Star Fox to appear where needed throughout Lylat during the Aparoid Invasion. Eventually, the Great Fox led a fleet of Cornerian Defense Force warships to the Aparoid Homeworld, where in the conclusion of the battle, a large swarm of aparoids attacked the Great Fox out in space, while the team was trying to gain access to the planet's core. Its systems compromised and, due to the lack of proper weaponry on exposed areas of the ship's hull, it soon fell prey and was infected by the machine-assimilating aliens. Before it could be compromised, Peppy and ROB, despite knowing it would mean their deaths, heroically sacrificed the ship by deliberately ramming it into the Anti-Laser Shield blocking the main entrance to the core. Peppy and ROB escaped at the last moment, escaping in the ship's bridge, which could also serve in an escape pod function. The pod, rejoining the team following the destruction of the planet, flew back to Corneria.

Despite its tendency to stay on the sidelines and support the team when it can, the Great Fox has come under direct attack. During the battle in Sector Z, the ship comes under threat from a volley of Venom missiles. Failure to intercept and destroy these missiles results in the Great Fox having one of its four wings destroyed, crippling it and rendering it unable to provide cover-fire in the following difficult stage.
Star Fox 2
A ship called the "Mothership" appears in Star Fox 2. It is considered to be the Great Fox's predecessor. The Mothership was only a carrier-ship without weapon-capacity, so it meant it could only be outside the battle, but could hold and repair up to six fighters.

Note that during that same battle, the Great Fox acts as a quick-repair station in the heat of battle. If a player aligns his Arwing with the rear docking bay of the ship, the Arwing will fly in and subsequently fly out the frontal, lower docking bay, with both wings and shields fully repaired.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Great Fox appears in several stages. Super Smash Bros., the Star Fox 64 stage Sector Z is featured as a stage where the Great Fox acts as the platform on which the players fight each other. The players can only traverse the ship length-wise. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Great Fox is greatly reduced to a smaller, unrealistic size (however if the game mode is "Tiny Melee", where all characters are smaller the characters are roughly to scale to the ship). It is featured on two stages; in the Corneria level, the Great Fox acts as a platform as in Super Smash Bros. Melee but doubles as a hazard. Occasionally, the cannons on the bottom-side open fire. The blasts from Great Fox can trap and instantly KO any unlucky combatant who flies into its line of fire.  The cannons are also platforms of the stage that can be destroyed, afterwards they are no longer platforms. Also if a player is standing on the cannons when they fire the player will take serious damage and most likely die. The Venom level has players traversing the Great Fox width-wise as it skims along the barren plane. It also briefly appears in both places' introductions, in Melee shown along with the Captain Falcon's Blue Falcon and Samus Aran's starship while in Super Smash Bros., it is shown very briefly before the camera zooms into the bridge to show Fox.  In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the trailer revealed at the Nintendo World Tour on November 3rd, 2006 revealed a new Star Fox stage, with the fighting taking place atop an new space craft called the Pleiades which flies through the atmosphere of Corneria, through an asteroid belt and a space battle, along with the original Great Fox flying in the background with Arwings. The Corneria stage (including the Great Fox) from Super Smash Bros. Melee makes a return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as part of the returning Melee Stages. The Great Fox also appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawls The Subspace Emissary mode, where it engages the Halberd, Meta Knight's battleship prior to being hijacked by the Subspace Army, in battle. The Halberd grapples the Great Fox with a chain and rams it into a mountain peak, heavily damaging the ship.

Perhaps the only weakness of the vessel is the firing arc of its laser cannons. The Great Fox cannot fire from its side or from behind, making the ship vulnerable to attack in these areas. This is manifested in the Sector Z level, in which the ship's cannons cannot hit the oncoming missiles as they are coming from the side, and in the beginning cut scene of the Meteo level, when one of the asteroids hits one of the Great Fox's wings (this hardly does any damage to the ship however).

Profiles
In Star Fox Adventures, the Great Fox is mostly seen from the inside, serving as somewhat of a home base for the team members. It has fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years due to insufficient funds by the team, and its exterior armor has begun to deteriorate. The power of the engines have also decreased considerably, and the ship is only able to drift, producing a ring of flames from its boosters as it does so. The weapons are never seen firing in the game, although it's possible that they don't work as they were not being used against Andross in the final battle above the planet Sauria where the Great Fox is orbiting.

In Star Fox Command, the Star Fox team has to get a new mothership after the Great Fox gets destroyed in Assault. However, the new ship looks totally different from the Great Fox's past models, resembling more of a space-faring aircraft carrier than a battle-cruiser. It is also significantly weaker in terms of defense than the original Great Fox. The original Great Fox could survive a simultaneous direct hit from three missiles and come out with only one wing destroyed, while the new one can't even withstand an assault by even the weakest of enemies, this could possibly be because of this ship being much less expensive than its predecessors. But its redeeming quality is the ability to carry up to three missiles which can be used to attack clusters of enemies from afar rather than attack them directly with a pilot.

It was originally built per request by James McCloud who hired Space Dynamics Co. to construct it which he paid for with an 80 year loan. The Star Fox team still use the money they earn from mercenary missions to repay this loan.

The Great Fox was destroyed in Star Fox: Assault, and would be replaced with another ship of the same name in Star Fox Command.

History

Star Fox series

Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars

Fox inside the Great Fox.
The original Great Fox from Star Fox 64.

Star Fox Adventures

In Star Fox Adventures, the Great Fox has a smaller role. The main menu is set from within the Great Fox. During gameplay itself, the Great Fox first appears in a cutscene right after Krystal is imprisoned. The Great Fox is wandering through space, and inside the ship, General Pepper assigns Fox with the new mission of rescuing Dinosaur Planet. As shown from the world map, the Great Fox orbits around Dinosaur Planet during Fox's adventure on it. His teammates, Slippy, Peppy, and ROB 64, remain in the Great Fox, and the former two of whom communicate to Fox and assist him throughout his journey. The Great Fox appears again in the ending, after Fox defeats Andross (with help from Falco). As Andross explodes into a giant blast of energy, Fox and Falco quickly retreat their Arwings back into the Great Fox. Inside it, Fox is congratulated by the Star Fox team and Krystal for saving Dinosaur Planet.

Prior to the game's events, the Great Fox has slightly deteriorated as the Star Fox team had a lack of funds to keep it in prime condition.[1] This is shown from the Great Fox's aging outer shell.

Star Fox: Assault

With the money received by General Pepper for successfully saving Sauria from destruction and the Lylat system from devastation, the team were able to overhaul the Great Fox. It now appeared as a much sleeker and cleaner looking ship, inside and out, and also added new equipment. This included a long-range transfer system that can send Arwings and Landmasters to a planet's surface when needed, though the team's leader Fox McCloud indicated that it had poor targeting systems.

Star Fox 2

The Mothership in Star Fox 2

A ship called the "Mothership" appears in Star Fox 2. It is considered to be the Great Fox's predecessor. The Mothership was only a carrier-ship without weapon-capacity, so it meant it could only be outside the battle, but could hold and repair up to six fighters.

Super Smash Bros. series

Brawl's The Subspace Emissary mode, where it engages the Halberd, Meta Knight's battleship prior to being hijacked by the Subspace Army, in battle. The Halberd grapples the Great Fox with a chain and rams it into a mountain peak, heavily damaging the ship.

The mother ship of Team Star Fox. Its oversized plasma engines let it warp during interplanetary voyages. It carries the team's Arwings and Landmaster in its cargo hold, kept unlocked in case of emergency, and is equipped for emergency Arwing landings. Its two laser canons can be used to blast asteroids. It's piloted by the robot ROB 64, who also issues directions to the teams.
