ROB 64 (or ROB64[1]), also known as ROB The Robot[2] and as ROB for short, is the robotic operator of the Star Fox team's mothership, the Great Fox. He first appears in Star Fox 64.
Overview
ROB's name is a reference to the NES accessory, R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy), which is another type of robot. The "64" is derived from the Nintendo 64, which is the console of his first appearance, the Nintendo 64. His Japanese name, NUS64, has a slightly different derivation from the Nintendo 64; it is a reference to the console's serial number, including its peripherals. It is also the abbreviation of "Nintendo Ultra 64", which was a working title for the Nintendo 64. In Star Fox Adventures, the letters "NUS" are located at the top of his chest.
Because ROB 64 is capable of piloting the Great Fox, which technically makes it entirely autonomous. ROB 64 is networked to the ship's main computers, allowing him to process information requested by the Star Fox team. ROB can also use the Great Fox's transfer device to deliver vehicles and items to members of the Star Fox team out in the field.
ROB 64 has a metallic and humanoid-like body. His head is somewhat oval-shaped, and his face has a small plate with vents for a mouth, which moves as he communicates. ROB 64 has a glowing, red visor for eyes. His torso is out-thrust and has a rectangular LED screen displaying the Star Fox team's symbol. He has extendable wrists on both of his arms.
History
Star Fox 64
In Star Fox 64, ROB 64's role was operating and maintaining the Great Fox. When needed, ROB sent supply boxes that contained rings or Smart Bombs from the mothership. ROB also repaired the shield-depleted Arwings of Fox's teammates, and would be done with fixing them by the time Fox had finished the next level. ROB only serves to relay information to the pilots, such as "Location confirmed. Sending supplies." or "Great Fox will cover you." In this game, ROB is the most analytical.
In its Nintendo 3DS remake, Star Fox 64 3D, ROB 64 provides the occasional advice for the player to take a 10-15 minute break.
Star Fox Adventures
In Star Fox Adventures, ROB has minor appearances in the opening and ending cutscenes with the Great Fox, along with the core Star Fox team. Around the time Fox landed on Dinosaur Planet, ROB tried to send Fuel Cells down to him, but they were scattered across the planet by accident.
In the opening cutscene, ROB is repaired by Slippy Toad, and in the end cutscene, ROB jokes about Fox's attraction to Krystal. Star Fox Adventures is the first game where ROB's whole body is shown.
Star Fox Assault
In Star Fox: Assault, ROB 64 had a similar role as in Star Fox 64. He was nearly destroyed when Peppy Hare crashed the Great Fox into the shield protecting the entrance to the Aparoid Queen's lair, but Peppy and ROB managed to use an escape pod before the ship was destroyed. The Apraroid Queen had used ROB's voice to try and convince the team to "join them".
Star Fox Command
ROB reappears in Star Fox Command, piloting the new Great Fox in the map mode, and also giving some advice to Fox and the other characters during the missions. On some paths in the game, ROB joins Star Wolf team when no "hero" character is playable. In this game, he, like in Adventures, becomes more humanoid, even uttering sarcastic remarks. For instance, if the Great Fox is destroyed, ROB says, "Goodbye cruel world." He even has veiled feelings for Lucy Hare, when he remarks to her that he'd do anything for her.
