"Annoying bird! I am the great Leon!"
— Leon Powalski, Star Fox 64

Leon Powalski (レオン ポワルスキー Reon Powarusukī) is a member of the Star Wolf Team, and is the only member other than Wolf himself that has been on the team since its creation. Leon's past is unknown, but he most likely had some past rivalry with Falco Lombardi and somewhat Slippy Toad, whom he mainly concentrates on during dogfights in Star Fox 64 and bickers with in Star Fox: Assault.

Leon's personality has changed noticeably since Star Fox 64. He has gone from a classy, competent pilot to a crazed, ruthless assassin who usually gives a deranged laugh after defeating a foe. His voice has also changed dramatically to suit this; originally, his tone was calm and sinister, but it has recently become high-pitched and maniacal.

Despite his ruthless swagger and love of the hunt, Leon loves to adorn his maniacal disposition to maintain his spot as the assassin on the Star Wolf Team. This shows that he is somewhat of a narcissist, and enjoys his feared reputation as the killer, as indicated from quotes: "Annoying Bird! I am the Great Leon!" (64) when he is chasing Falco, and "Who do you think I am?!?" (Assault) when you shoot at him.

Oddly, his personality in Star Fox Command seems to contradict his cold-blooded image. It is implied that, beneath his facade, he has a soft spot for peace. This is hinted at in his profile in the Pilot Gallery and his rejoicing after defeating the Anglar Emperor because he claims that he will look forward to parades with flowers and other such niceties. This may imply that he may be a different person under the cold-blooded reputation he had earned throughout the series.

Leon has been voiced by Shinobu Satouchi in all Japanese versions of the games. In Star Fox 64, he and Wolf O'Donnell were voiced by Rick May; in Star Fox: Assault, he and Panther Caroso were voiced by David Scully. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he and Fox McCloud are voiced by Jim Walker.

In Star Fox Command, Leon has a customized ship called the Rainbow Delta, which may allude to his supposed soft spot or reference the fact that chameleons can change the hue of their scales into a rainbow of colors.

Appearance and personality

Leon's appearance is based on that of a Chameleon. In Star Fox: Assault, he is featured wearing a blue jump-suit.

His official debut was in Star Fox 64 on the planet Fortuna, or later on Bolse or Venom Here, his primary target would always be Falco Lombardi. While engaged with Falco, Leon would often comment on his own superiority and, when shot down, became incensed by the fact that he had been defeated despite being the Great Leon.

In Star Fox: Assault, his demeanor and personality had drastically changed, he was portrayed as a dangerous psychopath and assassin, rather than the calm sadist he was in Star Fox 64.

History

Star Fox Command

In Star Fox Command, Leon and Star Wolf gained a huge bounty on their heads due to continuing criminal activity.

Fog of War

This story occurs if Fox and Slippy go to Fichina to aid Lucy Hare.

Wolf, Leon, and Panther attacked Fox and Slippy on their mission on Fichina. While Leon appeared here, he played no large role in the attack.

Former Rivals

This story occurs if Fox goes to Fichina to hire Wolf.

Once again, the Star Wolf team attacked Fox on Fichina. Leon's only role was taunting Fox for fighting three on one. Later, when Wolf and Fox were heading to the planet Solar, Wolf suggested they forget about Falco and look for Leon and Panther.

Krystal

This story is seen if ROB 64 follows Fox on Katina.

In this storyline, Fox went to Fichina to beg Krystal's forgiveness. She was there with two of her new teammates, Leon and Panther. Leon taunted Fox for his mistakes, but was the only one to think about him after the mission. Leon laughed at Fox as he begged Krystal to rejoin his team.

Star Wolf Returns

This story occurs if Krystal chooses not to return to Star Fox.

Leon followed Krystal and Panther to Venom where they met up with Wolf. Leon revealed that he couldn't wait to be hero[1] and seemed to show a friendlier side.[2] Leon helped his team members finally defeat the Anglar Emperor and returned to Corneria to claim his title as hero.
