A player can play one of many modes in the game. There is Main Game mode, which goes through the storyline, Training, which teaches the player how to play the game, VS, which can have multiple players compete through Point Match, Battle Royal, and Time Trial, Ranking, which ranks players with their name (limit 3 letters) and number of hits, Sound, which allows the player to modify the game's sound, and Data, which lets the player delete saved data.

Adventure Mode

The evil Andross is banished to the deserted wasteland of Venom by General Pepper after trying to conquer Corneria, major planet of the Lylat System. Later Pepper detects strange goings on so he sends James McCloud, Pigma Dengar, and Peppy Hare to investigate. Upon arrival Pigma betrays the others and Andross captures them. In the fighting, Andross kills James while Peppy escapes to tell James's son Fox McCloud.

Years later Andross attacks the Lylat System again and declares war. Pepper sends the new Team Star Fox, consisting of Fox, Falco Lombardi, Peppy, and Slippy Toad. They go through Corneria to defeat Andross's forces there, and eventually end up fighting Andross's soldier Granga inside a mech, and destroy him. Alternately, Falco can lead Fox to the Attack Carrier, which Fox destroys sending it crashing into the ocean.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th stages: From here, multiple paths can be taken and it is unclear which is canon (beyond the fact that it must be one going through Area 6). From Corneria, Fox can go to Meteo or Sector Y. At Meteo, Fox and his team fight the Meteo Crusher, a ship driven by an ape soldier, and destroy it. From Meteo they go to Fichina (misnamed as Fortuna) to defend a base from Andross's forces, who eventually plant a bomb to blow it up. Star Fox's rivals Star Wolf arrive, consisting of Wolf O'Donnell (Fox's rival), Leon Powalski (Falco's rival), Pigma (Peppy's rival, due to Pigma's betrayal), and Andross's nephew Andrew Oikonny (Slippy's rival). Star Fox defeats them and Fox disables the bomb (If Star Wolf is not defeated in time the bomb will explode and Star Fox will go to Sector X, defeating Spyborg). With the Fichina base saved, Star Fox goes to Solar and Fox destroys Andross's bio-weapon, the lava monster Vulcain.

An alternate path to be taken is if the Attack Carrier is destroyed at Corneria. This will lead to Sector Y, which can lead to Katina or Aquas. At Katina, Fox defends a base from Andross's forces, destroying the mother ship to save the base. If he succeeds, he will go to Solar and destroy Andross's bio-weapon Vulcain. If he fails, he will go to Sector X and destroy the unfinished robot Spyborg. If Fox goes to Aquas instead of Fichina or Katina, he and his team restore the polluted ocean to normal by destroying Andross's bio-weapon, the clam Bacoon. They go to Zoness, where, assisted by Katt Monroe, they destroy the pirate Sarumarine by sinking his submarine.

Fifth stage: From Solar, Sector X, or Zoness, Star Fox goes to Macbeth, attacking Andross's supply base. The Forever Train carries some of Andross's supplies to the supply depot and Fox chases it in a landmaster to destroy it while the others battle Andross's ships in Arwings above. As they near a fuel bunker, they go by eight switches. Fox shoots them with his Landmaster (Falco will shoot the eighth if he was not forced to leave the previous level, and Katt will also help if Fox came from Zoness), while the train engineer sends a trainman (possibly the conductor) inside the mech, Mechbeth, after Fox, but after all eight switches are hit Fox hits the main lever, which changes the railroad's path and causes the train to crash into the fuel bunker, destroying both along with Mechbeth.

Alternately from Sector X or Zoness, Fox goes through Sector Z alongside the Great Fox and defends it from missiles.

Ending: Either the victory at Macbeth or Sector Z (whichever Fox goes as his fifth stage) leaves Venom open for a direct attack through Area 6. Star Fox penetrates all Area 6's lines of defense, while receiving a threatening message from Andross. The Area 6 Commander, as a last resort, deploys a mechanical monster, Gorgon, to destroy Star Fox, but Fox destroys Gorgon and goes straight to Venom. There, he and his team are attacked by Star Wolf (if Fox did not go through Fichina, this will be their first encounter but their faces are still disfigured), who have better ships than before. Fox defeats all four of them and goes to Venom's core to face Andross alone. Andross, through his experiments, has transformed into a gigantic head with two disembodied hands (explaining the strange goings on that Pepper detected). Fox destroys Andross's hands and head, leaving him as a gigantic brain with eyes. Eventually Fox defeats Andross, destroying him in a nuclear explosion. Andross attempts to take Fox with him but his father's spirit (though many have speculated that James is still alive) rescues him and leads him out of the base before it explodes.

Peace is restored to the Lylat System and General Pepper asks Star Fox if they want to join the Cornerian Army. Fox says they prefer to do things their own way, and return to the Great Fox. Pepper gives Fox a lot of money for defeating Andross and his forces.

False ending: If Slippy is snatched during the Spyborg battle, if a single missile hits the Great Fox at Sector Z, or if the eight switches are not hit in time on Macbeth (so that only Mechbeth and not the train is destroyed), Star Fox will attack Venom through Bolse rather than Area 6. Arriving at Venom from Bolse, Fox will fight a golem and then face Andross at the core, revealing him to be a robotic, false version of Andross, which is destroyed while the real Andross survives. This is the non-canon ending, given Star Fox Adventures.

Game Play

Throughout the game, the player will drive or pilot a vehicle, avoiding hazards, shooting down enemies and helping out their team members.

Hidden Routes

At certain points on certain levels, so long as Falco hasn't been shot down, then he will show you an alternate, often harder, way out to the boss. In doing so, you will unlock a different stage to go to after completing the current one.

Items

  • Smart Bomb - When activated, this ite flies out in front of you and explodes after a short period of time, dealing damage to anything that the shockwave comes into contact to.
  • Laser Upgrade - This item upgrades your laser up to the next level. If it is already at the highest level, nothing will happen.
  • Ship Repair - This item repairs your Arwing a small way.

Vehicles

  • Arwing - The most common vehicle that you will use. Every member of the Star Fox team use it.
  • Landmaster - Used on Macbeth and Titania. It is a small tank that Fox uses when he has to do a ground mission. The other members of the Star Fox team do no use this.
  • The Blue Marine - This vehicle is only used on Aqua. It is a submarine that is used for underwater missions. As with the Landmaster, Only Fox use this machine.

Stages

Each of the stages in Star Fox 64 are based around one of the planets of the Lylat System.

There will be seven stages in each playthrough. Depending on how the player finishes the stage, it will lead to a different area.

The first stage will always be Corneria, which can lead to Meteo or Sector Y. Meteo can lead to Fichina (misnamed as Fortuna) or Katina, while Sector Y can lead to Aquas or Katina. Fichina and Katina will lead to Solar if the enemy is defeated and Sector X is the enemy is not defeated, destroying the base. Aquas will lead to Zoness. Solar will lead to Macbeth. Zoness can lead to Macbeth or Sector Z, and Sector X can lead to either, or, if Slippy is captured, Titania.

Titania will lead to Bolse. Macbeth and Sector Z will lead to Bolse if the mission is not accomplished (at Macbeth the train must be sent crashing into the fuel bunker, while at Sector Z the Great Fox must be protected from missiles). If the mission is accomplished at either fifth stage then Fox will go to a direct attack from Area 6.

Venom will always be the seventh and final stage. If Fox arrives from Bolse, then he will fight a fake Andross. If Fox arrives from Area 6, he will fight the real Andross.

It is unknown which path is canon. It is clear that it is the Area 6 path to the real Andross, given his status in Star Fox Adventures. Also, when Star Wolf is fought at Venom their faces are disfigured, hinting injuries suffered from a previous defeat, which implies that the path leading through Fichina (Corneria, Meteo, Fichina, Solar, Macbeth, Area 6, Venom) may be the canon one, but it is unconfirmed.
