Super Smash Bros. (known in Japan as Dairantō Smash Brothers) is a crossover fighting game franchise created by Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo, featuring a plethora of characters across various different Nintendo franchises, as well as third-party material in later games.

Description

The Super Smash Bros. franchise first began development in the late 90s under the name Dragon King: The Fighting Game. The main purpose behind creating the game was to make use of the joystick on the Nintendo 64 controller, as Masahiro Sakurai was curious about how it would work in a multiplayer environment. Additionally, Sakurai wanted to create a game involving four fighters, as opposed to the traditional gameplay seen in games such as Street Fighter. However, during preliminary development, Sakurai felt it was missing the correct atmosphere for home consoles, stating that the characters he had planned for inclusion in the game seemed too similar to one another; while he thought this would be acceptable in an arcade setting, he felt that games for home consoles would need better depth in order to captivate its audience. The project was then retooled to contain fighters from Nintendo products instead, and was then rebranded as Super Smash Bros., becoming an unexpected hit, with three sequels arriving over the next decade.

  2. 2.0 2.1 The Pokémon Trainer stays in the background while the player takes direct control of Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard. The set is listed under the name "Pokémon Trainer". The player can choose which Pokémon to begin playing with and can switch between them during the battle.
  3. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zero Suit Samus can either be selected before battle as an alternate form of Samus Aran or formed during battle when Samus' armor is destroyed, either manually or by her Final Smash.
