Missiles are common weapons which explode upon impact and can cause anything from minor damage to completely obliterating its target.

Missiles vary in size, speed, and power depending on their make and purpose. Generally, the larger, slower missiles cause the most devastating damage.

Most Notable Uses

In the game Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 64, large missiles known as Copperheads deployed from Warp space and had locked onto the Great Fox in Sector Z. These missiles, if left alone, can cause serious damage to the Great Fox's hull and can have fatal results if more of them hit their mark. (see: Copperheads)

In the unreleased Star Fox 2, missiles counted as enemy units and were aimed directly at Corneria and its cities.

In Star Fox: Assault for the Nintendo GameCube, assimilated missiles were deployed by the Aparoids in an atempt to take out the Beltino Orbital Gate and its surrounding stations.

In Star Fox Command for the Nintendo DS, the missiles were aimed at the Great Fox and needed to be dispatched as quickly as possible. In this version, if one missile came into contact with the Great Fox, it meant an automatic mission failure.

In all games, small ship-sized missiles were launched at the player from both enemies and bosses. These missiles were not as lethal nor as slow as their larger versions, but could still cause some serious damage to the player if unavoided.

Methods of Destruction

The situations and methods of destroying a missile before it reached its intended target varied from game to game.

In both 64 and Assault, the player flew around in a given area destroying each missile as they drew close. The missiles took a great deal laserfire before they could be destroyed. The only difference in Assault is that some of the missiles in this game were made up of several sections that needed to be destroyed seperately.

In Star Fox 2, the player would fly around a given arena and attempt to take out the missile before it had a chance to fly out of range.

In Star Fox Command, the missiles fly on ahead of the player leaving a trail for the player to follow. If the player misses any of the targets before reaching the missile, the missile will fly out of range and will draw closer to the Great Fox. If the player successfully flies through all of the targets in the missile's wake, the player will have a chance at destroying the missile. However, the player must still fly through targets while attacking, making dispatching the missile difficult.

HIT +10 (The missile counts as 11 enemy ships destroyed).

Star Fox Command

Extra Time (based on how many beacons were flown through before the missile was shot down and the player's time bonus).
