Lylat Wiki:Improving The Wiki

From Lylat Wiki, your source on Star Fox information. By Fans, for Fans.
Jump to navigationJump to search

With the merger nearly complete, and us having content in the actual pages, i thought it was time we started improving the wiki internally.

Feel free to add new ideas in new topics in addition to contributing to any that are bellow.

In addition to here, A thread has been started on the NIWA forums about this. Please check it out, when everyone gets a chance. :).

Simplifying Discussion pages

The Disscusion system i put together is.... rather complex.... which is bad, since apparently no one uses it. Should i scrap it all and combine all the discussion pages? Is there something else i should do? [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

Speeding up the wiki

There are some people around the NIWA who say Lylat Wiki is... well... pretty slow. Any suggestions on how to improve on it's speed? [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT)

I have to agree that the wiki is pretty slow, but the reason is that we lack a community. Compared to the other wikis, we have a very small user count. Star Fox just does not have a strong fanbase anymore and the current fans' only interest is to complain how the games are no longer good. My idea is that we ask some other NIWA members to help us deciding what pages are Stub-level, good, decent, etc (basically find people to be an evaluation team). We could also make contact with other sites and hope that brings traffic and users.--— T W 12:04, 7 May 2011 (PDT)

I am not entirely sure that's what i meant by the speed of the wiki. I meant stuff like: how long it takes to load a page, how easy it is to search for something in the wiki's search engine and why sometimes the server stops working all together. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:14, 8 May 2011 (PDT).
Oh, well I haven't experienced any problems in that department, at least, no more than I do on any other NIWA wikis. That might be why I misinterpretted what you meant.--— T W 15:48, 8 May 2011 (PDT)
It is fine. I will ask around the forums. Thank you anyway. [Tacopill|(talk)] 14:56, 11 May 2011 (PDT).

I was thinking, since I do agree it is slow, that maybe we could scan the server for something and virus proof the site. Just a thought.--2dogboy2 18:14, 16 April 2012 (PDT)

That might be a solution, however according to the webhost, there doesn't seem to be any problems server-wise. [Tacopill|(talk)] 18:39, 16 April 2012 (PDT)

Contacting Affiliates

What star fox communities can we reach out to? Are there any out there that we can contact? [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

I'm thinking we should try to make contact with Star Fox Online, Krystal Archive, and Arwing Landing. I don't know what other sites there may be.--— T W 12:04, 7 May 2011 (PDT)

Those sound good. And who knows, maybe more will pop up in the future. Anyway, has any of them been contacted yet? [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:22, 8 May 2011 (PDT).
I seem to remember Neo contacting SFO and Arwing Landing some time ago, but certainly not recently. We might want to ask him about it. We might also want to ask other NIWA wiki admins how to go about with affiliations.--— T W 15:48, 8 May 2011 (PDT)
I am somewhat familiar with "how to contact affiliates", as some of our current affiliated are through contacts i made. The reason i brought it up, was to see who we wished to contact, and who have we contacted before hand. Anyway, NEO: can we get some info on this?
Also, Thank you for the recommendation.
[Tacopill|(talk)] 14:56, 11 May 2011 (PDT).
I don't know if you already know this, Tacopill, but it seems that Lylat Wiki is affiliated with Wikimon? There's a link on the site. I just thought it was something that should be mentioned. (Wolf O'Donnell 22:43, 27 May 2011 (PDT))
Yeap, Wikimon is one of our oldest affiliates, dating back to earlier days of the wiki. For a list of our current affiliates, see this page. [Tacopill|(talk)] 05:26, 29 May 2011 (PDT).

Shadows of Lylat

Related, When i was searching around the internet, i came across this community, Which seems active. What does everyone think? Should we contact them? [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

StrategyWiki Partnership

I have started discussions with StrategyWiki about a possible partnership which would allow us to use there logo, link to them more formally and for them to link back to us. But, how do we want to go about it? [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

Figured I should drop in here and give some advice. The system we use to link out to current partner wikis is to create two templates: a "More info" template to go on main guide pages (example); and an interwiki link-like template like this one, which also uses the wiki's favicon in place of the external link icon to highlight it as a link here. There's also a possibility of more specific link templates: Bulbapedia has Template:Bpm to link specifically to Pokémon moves. That's the system used with current partners, but feel free to suggest anything you feel may be more suitable. --Moydow 12:57, 15 May 2011 (PDT)
So, anything more happening here? --Moydow 18:51, 22 May 2011 (PDT)
Doesn't look like it. I wonder if anyone would mind us going ahead with it anyway. *lol*. [Tacopill|(talk)] 16:48, 23 May 2011 (PDT).
  • bump* --Moydow 18:46, 26 July 2011 (PDT)
I think it's a good idea, we should go for it. Foxdude54 08:42, 27 July 2011 (PDT)
Sounds good. Anyone else wish to chime in? If not, we can go with it. :D. [Tacopill|(talk)] 11:41, 30 July 2011 (PDT).

Ok guys, i have started stuff on the the StrategyWiki side of things. So... now we need to get working on our side. How do you think we should go about it? Something i have seen on other wiki's, is to place something in the infobox templates, similar to wikirby? Alternatively, we can have a "for more info" template, like bulbapedia has. What do you guys think? [Tacopill|(talk)] 22:36, 5 August 2011 (PDT).
Bumping this up. [Tacopill|(talk)] 16:52, 26 November 2011 (PST).

Custom Skin

What would we want in a custom skin? Do we want to use one of the defaults and then customize it; or would we rather use more customized skins. [Tacopill|(talk)] 10:39, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

This is my suggestion from the main page. we use the example image and white text for a week. We can also ask others on the NIWA forums if they have any advice. If it doesn't work out, we'll look at other images to see what works. If nothing else works, we'll hold an art contest.--— T W 12:04, 7 May 2011 (PDT)

I've been working on something and have almost finished it. There are a few problems still, though. I'll try to finish it tomorrow.--— T W 20:51, 7 May 2011 (PDT)

I think I finished it. Try putting this into your custom monobook setting to see. Something weird does happen, though, when editing the editting section splits. It did this even before my editing. Try looking at different version of the Fox, Krystal, Wolf image to see what works best.--— T W 09:02, 8 May 2011 (PDT)

A proposed skin
I am trying out the custom monobook.css, and i have to say.... good job! I like it. Let's see if other people like it. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:31, 8 May 2011 (PDT).
Have you checked out the edit pages? I have no idea what is causing the split edit box. It does work when editing the monobook.css, though. I originally wanted to use File:StarFoxGaming.png, but found that darker characters like Falco and Slippy don't lighten well.--— T W 15:48, 8 May 2011 (PDT)
That one to the right over thar -> is pretty freaking cool. Anyone want that as the new skin?—Justin(Talk) 00:18, 10 May 2011 (PDT)
I am cool with it. :) Foxdude, where are you? [Tacopill|(talk)] 14:56, 11 May 2011 (PDT).
Right here, tha skin looks amazing, I think we should go with it. Foxdude54 03:30, 12 May 2011 (PDT)
Sounds good. Should we wait to see if other people want to respond? [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:12, 15 May 2011 (PDT).
Looks good to me! DarkSamus89 07:49, 16 May 2011 (PDT)
The proposed custom skin looks pretty good, I say you should go ahead an try it. Metroid King 12:07, 16 May 2011 (PDT)
Alright, the only remaining somewhat-active user i was hoping to here from is Hope(N Forever). So, i will give him until Sunday, the 22nd, to respond. Otherwise, we will go ahead with it. :). [Tacopill|(talk)] 15:07, 19 May 2011 (PDT).
It's epic. --AnyGuy 12:04, 25 May 2011 (PDT)

The time has passed. I am going to start switching us over! TW, i had a second look at the edit box problem you mentioned, and, personally, i am not sure it is a problem. However, i am putting in the skin for everyone to see, and get further feedback on it. When the new skin is loaded, please go to Special:Preferences and switch your personal skin to "monobook". Once every reconfirms they like it (and we make any more changes we feel are needed) i will switch the default skin to it. [Tacopill|(talk)] 16:39, 23 May 2011 (PDT).

The Skin has been implemented. :). [Tacopill|(talk)] 12:50, 23 June 2011 (PDT).

More content

Most of the pages here don't have much on them. For example, Slippy still doesn't have content in the In Game History, and other Characters still don't have content in the Development (Out of date) section. We definatley need to improve that. --AnyGuy 12:01, 18 May 2011 (PDT)

If you refresh the main page a couple times, one of the things to be worked on is just that, expanding those areticles. Foxdude54 12:59, 18 May 2011 (PDT)
Does anyone know of Game Development sites, magazine articles or anything that would include related information on the characters? If not, then i may recommend we nix the section. The reason i ask, is that i know of only Fox's Out-of-game development (he is based on a japanese fox spirit), and i don't know what i would put for the rest of the characters. [Tacopill|(talk)] 15:11, 19 May 2011 (PDT).

No, but we should put more backbone into the in game history. --AnyGuy 12:48, 20 May 2011 (PDT)

Yea.....but how does one do that? (I am not a writer *lol*. So, unfortunately, i don't know how to accomplish it). [Tacopill|(talk)] 07:43, 21 May 2011 (PDT).
    • I could do that. :) --AnyGuy 17:03, 22 May 2011 (PDT)
One of the problems with the out of game development sections is that only Fox and Krystal really have enough known information to have a sizable section and to give you an idea of how large a section, look at about half of Krystal's trivia. Also, I think we need to have a good editor that has knowledge of the Star Fox comics. I've seen a few of them once, but I don't really know them well.--— T W 04:56, 22 May 2011 (PDT)
Makes sense. Till then, do we know of any reliable Fan Translations, to at least get something until we find someone who has read the comic.
Also, if only two character's have well known information on those sections, i would recommend removing the section altogether; and including the information somewhere else in the article. But that is up to the characters-wikiproject to decide. :).
[Tacopill|(talk)] 10:30, 22 May 2011 (PDT).
Er... I don't know if you guys read it, but in an Iwata Asks about SF64-3D, Dylan and Shiggy (and Tanako) talk about how the characters came to be... (I realise this convo is pretty old, but I still wanted to bring it up.) Article is here: iwataasks(dot)nintendo(dot)com/interviews/#/3ds/starfox/0/2
Sweet, Sources! Thank you for showing us. [Tacopill|(talk)] 19:04, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Merge

The merge is still going on, but since Arwinpedia still exists, I'm going to be active at both of them. I'm sure we can make this work, but if not, explain. Blue Ninjakoopa 19:17, 4 July 2011 (PDT)

Um.... sorry to inform you of this late, but the merger was declared over by the community. [Tacopill|(talk)] 08:05, 9 July 2011 (PDT).
