[[Category:Star Fox games]]
Starting the game gives the player an I.D. card with their Mii's portrait on it, indicating they're now employed by Cornerian Precious Metals Ltd., Grippy's mining company. Players are tasked by Grippy to defend his mining bases from robotic invaders looking to end his operations.

The main object of the game is to use a security system called AegisCam, invented by Slippy, to defend cores on mining bases from an onslaught of robots. Players must use the Wii U Gamepad to cycle between 12 customizable security cameras and shoot down any enemy robots that warp in. If the mining core gets hit even once, it's game over, but each successful defense can increase the player's profile rank, unlocking various rewards such as new and extra missions, new camera types, or emblems and titles to customize their I.D. card with.

There are many different types of robots to fight against, but they are separated into one of two classes: The Chaos Class attempts to weaken your defense by creating distractions or attacking your cameras, while the Combat Class attempts to infiltrate and destroy the mining core. Defeating the Combat robots will successfully conclude the player's defense, and defeating Chaos robots will contribute extra points toward the player's rank. It's up to the player to decide how best to approach each defense to maximize their points while ensuring their success.

There are two main modes available in ''Star Fox Guard'': Main Game takes the player on a journey through mining bases established throughout the Lylat System, as Grippy expands his operation thanks to your efforts, while World Rivals allows players to go online and compete to earn the highest defense streak and the highest amount of versus points.

Players can contribute to the World Rivals mission pool by uploading their own invasion group using the Squad Editor. In this unlockable mode, any robots discovered can be added to a slider that can be adjusted to determine when and where the player's robots will appear, plus the path they will take. Successful invasions will reward bonus points upon visiting the Notifications menu. The player can consistently return to the game to edit their squads and compete against other invasions to raise their overall score and see how far they can go.
