The game is notable for being the first ''Star Fox'' game to feature on-foot missions, save for the secret on-foot multiplayer mode in ''[[Star Fox 64]]''. The core gameplay is oriented in a way that the [[Arwing]] missions are reduced have arcade-based gameplay. ''Star Fox Adventures'' is considered the [[wikipedia:Black sheep|black sheep]] of the series. This is mainly because an irrelevant [[Nintendo 64]] title, ''[[Dinosaur Planet]]'', was cancelled and reworked into this game. ''Star Fox Adventures'' is the last game that Rareware developed for a Nintendo home console, before the resulting [[wikipedia:Microsoft|Microsoft]] acquisition.

The gameplay is heavily based on ''[[zeldawiki:The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time|The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time]]''. Fox is unable to jump unless he runs off the edge of an object or a cliff, and can roll after landing on the ground, in the same fashion that Link jumps off edges. ''Star Fox Adventures'' also has a day-and-night phase, but a more accurate and gradual one. A key difference with ''Star Fox Adventures'' is that Fox automatically acquires his targets by approaching them, unlike in ''The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'', where the player must use manual [[zeldawiki:Targeting|targeting]] to lock-on their target.

*[[Fox McCloud]] - The leader of the Star Fox team. He goes down to Dinosaur planet to try and put it back together. He is the main character of the game.

*[[Krystal]] - A adventurous vixen that receives a distress signal from Dinosaur planet and attempts to save the planet alone.  

*Prince [[Tricky]] - A small dinosaur from the EarthWalker tribe. He meets Fox on Ice Mountain when he gets captured by the Sharpclaws. After Fox saves him and brings him back to his mother, he travels with Fox.

*[[General Scales]] - The leader of the SharpClaw tribe and and the main antagonist of the game. He is the reason why Dinosaur Planet is slowly getting ripped apart and tries continuously to prevent Fox from stopping his plans.

*[[Peppy Hare]] - A member of the Star Fox team who gives map directions to Fox.  

*[[Slippy Toad]] - Another member of the Star Fox team. He is quite skilled in mechanics and gives Fox hints on what he needs to do next.

*[[Falco Lombardi]] - An old member of the Star Fox Team. He left the team and his whereabouts are currently a mystery.

Every level except the main world, Dinosaur Planet, have a [[SpellStone]] that Fox must recover.
