;Why should a category be delete?
:Deleting a category reduces the amount of pages there in the wiki, which helps us keep it neat and tidy. If a category goes unused and unpopulated, and has no reason for being, it is sloppy to just have it sitting around there.
;Are there categories we shouldn't delete?
:Yes. For two reasons:
:# if the category has members, and that category doesn't fulfill the same purpose as another. To check these, compare two categories. If the nature of the members are different enough that there is some kind of distinction between the two, then it should be keep. If the natures are very similar, then they should be merged, with all the members of one transferring to the other,
:#* for example, Say we had 2 categories: ''Star Fox Members'' and ''Characters''. All the members of the Category Star Fox Members are members of Characters, and the nature of the members in said category are pretty much solid members of that team. So, you have a a few options,
:#** a) Move all members of ''Star Fox Members'' into ''Characters'', and get rid of the category: ''Star Fox Members''.
:#** b) Remove all members of ''Star Fox Members'' from ''Characters'', and get rid of none of them. ''Star Fox Members'' should be made into a subcategory of ''Characters'', if it is not already, as it has nothing but characters right now.
:#* Which option you go with is up to the community to decide. And only then can you decide if a related category should be deleted
:# The category is marked with {{tl|maintance-category}} and is empty because no related work is being requested currently.

== To Delete a Category ==
To delete a category, please place the following on the category's discussion page:

{{category-delete | date = today's date | reasons = see bellow }}

where the {{tl|reason}} template is used once for each reason, each time filled out like this.

{{reason|[1|2|3|4|5|6|7]|user = your user name |date = today's date }}

The reason we ask for date twice (or more) is so a date can be association with the initial deletion proposal and once for each reason given, should multiple reasons pop up from more than one user. This way, we have one spot for all the reasons to be listed, and still only have one deletion discussion page for the category. This may never be a problem, but in case it does, we are prepared.

FAQs

Why should a category be deleted?
Deleting a category helps to organize the categorization to Lylat Wiki. There is no purpose to keeping an unused category without a purpose. If a category qualifies for deletion, add the Delete template and specify a reason. Syntax: {{Delete|reason goes here}}
Are there categories we should not delete?
Yes. For two reasons:
 1. If a category has members that describe a subject more specifically, this means there is enough distinction for it to retain its own category. If there are two categories that are too similar, they must be merged. One category will be deleted, and all of its members must be recategorized under the other category. For example, Category:Characters and Category:Star Fox team are both about characters, but the Star Fox team category narrows down the list to characters who are specifically part of the team itself. These types of categories must remain separate, even if an article qualifies under both categories.
 2. An example of an unnecessary category is Category:Images with Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi--this can be split into Category:Fox McCloud images and Category:Falco Lombardi images respectively.
