Star Fox News

  • June 16, 2015 - At the Nintendo Direct Event @ E3 2015, Nintendo announced a new name and logo for the new game in development, Star Fox Zero, complete with a demonstration of a couple levels played by the presenters, along with some questions with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Also announced was that Platinum Games was helping with development. Storyline-wise, the video game is a complete reboot of the series, with Star Wolf but without Krystal, an some Star Fox 2 features, like the Arwing transforming into a mech-like vehicle, and a new flying machine, the Gyrowing.
  • November 07, 2014 - On the November 5, 2014 Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that the Fox (and possibly Falco) amiibo figurines will be compatible with various games outside of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which could include Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. In the case of the latter, using a Fox amiibo in that game will allow the playable Mii character to don a Fox McCloud-based suit.
  • September 05, 2014 - Yesterday's Nintendo Direct for the Wii U game Bayonetta 2 revealed the titular character Bayonetta will have the option to don a Nintendo Crossover Costume called "Star Mercenary", which is directly based on Fox McCloud. It addition, Bayonetta's guns will be fashioned after Arwings, and shoot lasers instead of bullets using the signature target-lock reticule. Whilst the Wii U port of the first Bayonetta game will include Crossover Costumes, the "Star Mercenary" is exclusive to the sequel. The game launches in North America and Europe on October 24, 2014. In other news, Nintendo confirms its first wave of 12 amiibo figurines will include Smash fighter Fox McCloud, and although they did not confirm a release date, the figurines are now available for pre-order at various physical and online retailers. Highly recommended to pre-order the Fox McCloud amiibo figurine from Amazon or Amazon UK.
  • June 10, 2014 - Prior to the debut of Nintendo's Digital Event at E3 2014, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed a new Star Fox game in development for Wii U, based on an interview with TIME magazine. The game in question was not officially announced at E3 itself though, although some mentions of it occurred during the live Nintendo Treehouse streaming event. We shall watch closely and have more info on this as it develops.

NIWA News

  • January 22nd, 2014 - NIWA added a new member on Saturday - it sure has been a while: Hard Drop Tetris Wiki, a wiki about the Tetris franchise. Although Tetris is considered a third-party franchise owned by The Tetris Company, the franchise is known to have a history of being worked on by several licensed entities, and Nintendo happens to be one of them. Albeit Nintendo does not develop Tetris games presently, the franchise still has a notable spot in Nintendo's own history, in addition to the several iteration of Tetris games available on various Nintendo consoles.
  • March 30th, 2012 - NIWA added a new member today: Dragon Quest Wiki, a wiki about the Dragon Quest series. Although Dragon Quest is considered a third-party franchise owned by Square-Enix, its latest games from 2007 onwards are Nintendo-exclusive entries, some of which were published by Nintendo themselves outside Japan, which is why the related wiki was qualified to be a NIWA member. Dragon Quest Wiki is also one of the founding wikis in the SEIWA network.
  • March 23rd, 2012 - Coinciding with the worldwide release of Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS, NIWA added a new member today: Icaruspedia, a wiki about the Kid Icarus series.
  • March 21st, 2012 - Lylat Wiki has been notified that fellow NIWA member StrategyWiki has been accepted into our affiliated Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance. If you have a minute to congratulate them, please do so here.
  • March 17th, 2012 - It has been almost a year since NIWA has had any more members, but now we are proud to finally announce that NIWA had added a new member: F-Zero Wiki, a wiki about the F-Zero series.

Star Fox News

  • June 03, 2014 - Nintendo has been gradually rolling out the new Update 2.0 for their Nintendo 3DS downloadable free-to-play title Steel Diver: Sub Wars. On Nintendo UK's Twitter page, in commemoration of the release, they announced that anyone who owns or purchases the Premium Version of Steel Diver: Sub Wars prior to June 19, 2014 will receive the new downloadable submarine - Star Fox's own Blue Marine - for free! This also confirms the Blue Marine as part of the roster of DLC submarines for Steel Diver: Sub Wars. This is the second Star Fox reference made for the title after Peppy Hare's cameo appearance when the Premium Version of the game is to be purchased.
  • December 16, 2013 - Nintendo has rolled out a Miiverse community for fans of Star Fox 64 3D. This can be accessed using the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, or an internet browser, but a Nintendo Network ID account is required to sign in (which, at this time, can only be created on a Nintendo 3DS or Wii U).
  • March 15, 2013 - In an interview with Nintendo Chronicle, Collin van Ginkel, co-founder of indie studio Two Tribes, notable for its Toki Tori series, has claimed that they "could make a damn fine Star Fox game for Wii U. Yes, a classic Star Fox game would be awesome to work on." Two Tribes marks as the third developer, after Retro Studios and Platinum Games, that is willingly volunteering to develop a new game based on the Star Fox IP license. It still a wonder why Nintendo, owner and publisher of said license, has not taken up any of the developers' offers as of yet.
  • December 26, 2012 - Rising, UK-based Nintendo gaming media outlet Nintendo Life recently conducted an exclusive interview with Phil Tossell, a former Rare employee known to be the lead software engineer for Star Fox Adventures. Whilst the interview is not a break-through premise about how a game like Star Fox Adventures ended up with so many holes in it, Tossell shared a lot of his own perspectives and memories surrounding the game's internal development period, from beginning to launch. Here's a direct link to that article in question if interested. By the way, it was recently revealed that one of the attractions in the Wii U launch game Nintendo Land - "Metroid Blast" to be precise - was originally themed after the Star Fox series during development before it was later dropped in favor of the Metroid series because it "works well" with the latter. Consider it fortunate that Namco Bandai were more considerate when they included a Fox McCloud-based costume as a bonus for their fighters in their own launch title Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition. Before I also forget, in case you are not already aware, Star Fox 64 3D has since been re-released as a Nintendo eShop downloadable, digital game since November 2012 in all regions.
  • July 10, 2012 - UK-based video game retailer GAME recently used their small press prowess to have a Q&A with the one and only Dylan Cuthbert, original lead designer for Star Fox and Star Fox 2, and founder of Q-Games. In this Q&A, Cuthbert reveals a few notable points about his career, his relationship with Nintendo and in particular with Shigeru Miyamoto, and his work on Star Fox. In fact, whilst not giving any hints about the type of gameplay we could anticipate with a possible Wii U Star Fox game, citing that he prefers what Shigeru Miyamoto would decide to do with that part, Cuthbert expressed his desire to work on another Star Fox game in the future, and "expand it further." Whilst the Q&A does not reveal any promises, it it quite an interesting read when it comes to Cuthbert's experience in the industry. GAME posted the entire Q&A interview on their official Facebook page.
  • July 7, 2012 - Whilst we did not get any hints of a new Star Fox game whatsoever at E3 2012, which was frankly widely considered by many media outlets as one of the worst received E3 events overall to begin with, major pop culture and entertainment press outlet IGN recently had an exclusive, short interview with the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto, speaking about seeing some familiar franchises for the upcoming Wii U console. Whilst Miyamoto did initially emphasize about the Wii U's unique GamePad controller having potential for a new Metroid game, he ended up saying that he would "personally" prefer to see a new Star Fox game for the Wii U. While this is not exactly an official announcement for anything relative, however quotes like this from one of the most notable executives at Nintendo would deem as valid hints towards expecting something at some point in the future.
  • May 5, 2012 - Rumor: This bit of information has been circulating the internet for about a year now, but apparently a new source has re-ignited this old rumor. Gaming blog Techtroid had claimed they were tipped off that Nintendo's American first-party developer - Retro Studios - are prepped to reveal an upcoming Star Fox game for the Wii U at this year's E3. Retro Studios are the highly acclaimed developers behind the Metroid Prime trilogy and the game Donkey Kong Country Returns. It has long been confirmed that they had been working on a "secret game" for the Wii U, but no one really considered the likelihood of it being a brand new Star Fox title. Like all rumors, and as much as we love to hope, it should be taken with a pinch of salt. Interestingly, a few days before Nintendo's initial presentation at E3 2010, there were rumors that Retro Studios were working on a new Donkey Kong title. Initially, such a rumor was not received with enthusiasm as people believed it was too far-fetched considering numerous factors, but during E3 Nintendo does indeed unveil Donkey Kong Country Returns, courtesy of Retro Studios. Therefore, a rumor it may still be, we do not recommend dissing the idea of a Star Fox Wii U title from Retro Studios just yet. Source
Nintendo had recently confirmed that their initial presentation during E3 2012 will debut on June 5, starting at 9am Pacific Daylight Time (local time). Nintendo confirms they will unveil first party titles such as Pikmin 3 and a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U. Nintendo also confirms they may not reveal the release date and price for the Wii U at E3, but rather at a later date.
  • November 18, 2011 - Have you been using Google lately? Of course, it is very, very unlikely anyone browsing on the internet would not ever use the ever-popular Google search engine. Anyway, why am I asking you if you had been using Google? Well, recently Google implemented something that could be considered a tribute to the Star Fox series. A sort of Easter egg, if you will. I shall not say any more about it, but you can easily find out yourself. I highly suggest you use the Google Chrome browser for this process though, as it may not work on just any platform. Log on Google's main page, and type in Peppy Hare's famous words, "Do a barrel roll." You will then see what happens exactly.
  • October 7, 2011 - Nintendo will be attending the New York Comic Con this year, and as usual in these events they are allowing the public to play a selection of highly anticipating games, including Star Fox 64 3D. It may not sound like a big deal since Star Fox 64 3D is already available in stores, but I am using this bit of news as a shameless plug so that people would acknowledge attending the convention anyway so that they try out the selection of many other yet-to-be-released games from Nintendo on all available consoles. Visitors to the convention might even get a surprise or two.
  • September 21, 2011 - Star Fox 64 3D's game planner - Yusuke Amano - recently revealed in an interview with the European Official Nintendo Magazine about the reasons behind the lack of online support in the game. He explained that making a satisfying, seamless multiplayer experience for every user would have been very costly for them, and additionally implementing any online support would have taken development time longer, and subsequently would have urged the development teams to release the game at a much later date. Development was heavily focused on the game's graphics in order to promote the appeal of the Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo's management could not allow any extra time in development either.
  • September 15, 2011 - So, with the release of Star Fox 64 3D in Australia today, this marks the total availability of the game worldwide. If you have the game for your own Nintendo 3DS units, enjoy one of the remake of one of the greatest retro games of all time!
  • September 13, 2011 - Despite being a remake, Star Fox 64 3D is enjoying quite a significant reception in its Western release. In the United Kingdom, it became the number one Nintendo 3DS game during its launch week, and it also took ninth place for best sold game of the week overall. Too bad we do not have any numbers from the United States yet.
  • September 9, 2011 - Unless you live in Australia, what in the world are you doing on this site? Go to your nearest video game store right now and pick up your local copy of Star Fox 64 3D, assuming if you have not already done so! If you do not have a Nintendo 3DS, then get one! Once you do, enjoy the game at long last!
  • August 26, 2011 - Do you recall when we reported early in July about a then-new "Iwata Asks" interview based on Star Fox 64 3D? Well, back then, the interview was only in Japanese, but as expected it has finally been officially translated, and posted up on other regional websites (except for Australia at the time of this post). Actually, the translations have been around for a while now, but I missed them the first time since due to lack of full attention back then. Sorry about that guys, but better late than never, in case you have not known about them already. Anyway, the interviews are a highly recommended read for true Star Fox enthusiasts, as it reveals some information bits nobody ever knew before. You can find the English translation either here or here.
  • August 24, 2011 - The annual Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) is returning to Seattle again this week, and Nintendo will be attending. Nintendo will be displaying a number of their most anticipated upcoming titles, including Star Fox 64 3D, which is not surprising since the game was featured during the Comic-Con event last month. However, in case you are attending PAX, just know that on August 27 there will be a Star Fox 64 3D tournament between 7pm and 10pm, and Nintendo will be having daily giveaways too. So, if you are attending PAX at that date, have fun! In unrelated news, there had been rumors that Nintendo might announce a revamped Nintendo 3DS design that is to be released in 2012. Gaming rumors tend to turn out true, but keep in mind it is always a good idea never to take any rumor seriously until the information had been officially confirmed.
  • August 17, 2011 - Nintendo of America is currently holding a Star Fox 64 3D promotional sweepstakes in conjunction with Air Combat USA. The winner gets to experience one of Air Combat USA's flights, which simulates the movements fighter pilots as in combat. This sweepstakes is only open to residents in the U.S. and Canada, however. Check it out here if interested! In other news, Hidetomo Komaki, a one-time chief Concept Artist at Namco, had recently released a bunch of his old, never-before-seen concept artwork, based on Star Fox: Assault, via his personal blog. The artworks are now permanently hosted on StarFox-Online. Take a look at them, as they make great references for fanart or otherwise.
  • August 10, 2011 - Not exactly related news, but since the situation is very similar to that that happened in Japan, I would personally say this is a notable mention. Nintendo of America recently confirmed that they are going to release the third official color of the Nintendo 3DS - Flame Red - in North America. Just like in Japan, the new color will coincide with the release of Star Fox 64 3D, meaning it will arrive on September 9, 2011. There is still no word whether the new color will be released in other regions as well. The new color will be the same price as the other colors, which will be 169.99 USD after Nintendo's critically notorious, official price-cut that will be established in two days from this date. For those of you who already own a Nintendo 3DS, are you eligible in the Ambassador's program yet?
  • July 21, 2011 - So much news coming in all of a sudden! First off, Star Fox 64 3D is enjoying a promising success in Japan, as the game sold over 32,000 copies in the first week alone, which made it the number one Nintendo 3DS game, and the sixth best game overall in the Japanese charts last week. Part of the success could possibly attribute to the new Flare Red Nintendo 3DS color release. In other news, Nintendo of America finally launches their own official website today, and although it uses a subsite URL, the page actually makes use of the StarFox.com domain, albeit as a mere redirect. Also, with the launch of the website comes even better news for the U.S. fans to rejoice, as NOA actually decided to bump up the release date from Sunday to Friday, which means the new official North American release date is now September 9, 2011 - the same day as the European release date! This is likely done in part to avoid the game clashing with the 10th Memorial of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
  • July 20, 2011 - Attending the Comic-Con in San Diego tomorrow? Nintendo will be there too, and they are going to allow the public to play an assortment of game demos, even for games that are yet-to-be-released. One of these games is the U.S. version of Star Fox 64 3D! In other news, Nintendo of America had released a brand new trailer for Star Fox 64 3D today. Check it out over here!
  • July 15, 2011 - Nintendo Australia finally launched their own official teaser website for Star Fox 64 3D, but unfortunately they still have yet to announce the release date for the Oceania region. Nintendo of America are the only ones left to put up their own official website. Another bit of news you mostly already known, Star Fox 64 3D is now available in Japan since yesterday! If you wish to import the game, you need to have a Japanese Nintendo 3DS as they are region-locked, unfortunately. Also, although unrelated directly to Star Fox, Nintendo Co., Ltd. had launched a new color for the Nintendo 3DS alongside the game - the Flare Red edition - the third official color which was originally revealed way back in E3 2010. July 16 Update: Oh wait! Silly me. Looks like the people of Oceania (Australia and New Zealand generally) will be getting the game on September 15, 2011, four days after the U.S. release. They did not post the date on the game's own site, but I found it elsewhere.
  • July 6, 2011 - In case you have not noticed, yesterday Nintendo Co., Ltd. unveiled a new interview in their popular "Iwata Asks" column. This time around the host, Nintendo president and CEO, Satoru Iwata, had taken some time to interview Star Fox creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Star Fox 64’s writer Mitsuhiro Takano, Nintendo EAD’s game planner Yusuke Amano, and Q-Games founder and president Dylan Cuthbert, who is also apparently Star Fox 64 3D’s game director. This interview officially confirms that Q-Games co-developed the game’s remake. In this interview, we find a lot of interesting tid-bits surrounding the development of Star Fox 64 3D, as well as other kinds of interesting information, like Cuthbert's initial days in Japan, which was sometime before he eventually worked on what became Star Fox! You can check out this and more in the interview over here. Of course, you have to know some Japanese to actually understand what these people are talking about. Like all of the "Iwata Asks" interviews, this one will eventually be translated and put up on NOA’s and NOE’s websites. However, I doubt this will happen too soon, as this interview was released just in time to market the game, since it will see its Japanese debut in less than two weeks from now! In the meantime, we will check into any available worthwhile alternatives for the English-speaking masses.
  • June 28, 2011 - Have you guys been to the official European Star Fox 64 3D website yet? It currently looks identical to the former Japanese teaser website, except for all the indicts which Nintendo of Europe (NOE) usually uses, as well as a different language. In fact, depending on which country's local hub you access, the website can be available in nine different languages, which include Flemish and NOE's new official language: Russian (I am aware that NOE also entered Poland, but that branch is not quite yet as developed as the others, and the website is not available in Polish anyway). Nintendo of America (NOA) has yet to have a website of its own, and interestingly they are the ones who own the StarFox.com domain, which still currently re-directs back to the main NOA hub! (NOA is being quite troublesome lately, which is why we are seeing groups like Operation Rainfall popping up every now and then!)
  • June 20, 2011 - Confirmation! Star Fox 64 3D will be released in Europe on September 9, 2011! That is two days before North America, apparently. Looks like Nintendo are now going into a big habit of publishing games in Europe slightly before North America. Unfortunately, there is no real confirmation whether the game will retain the original title, or replace it with Lylat Wars like during the Nintendo 64 days (although, at the time, they were sort of forced to, but they now have no real reason to do so), but it seems the former case is more likely.
  • June 7, 2011 - Nintendo's E3 2011 press conference had come and gone, and they officially announced the successor to the Wii console - Wii U. In addition to confirming the console's touch-screen controller, the Wii U boasts amazing HD visuals Nintendo fans had longed to see. In part of Star Fox news, nothing new had been announced, contrary to our great anticipation. However, Nintendo releases brand new footage for Star Fox 64 3D, which reveals that the game uses the same lines from the original, but with new voices for every character. Nintendo also roughly states that the game is confirmed for a U.S. release around September 2011. June 8 Update: Apparently, the game is now set to be specifically released in the U.S. on September 11, 2011. Strangely enough, just in time for the 10th Memorial of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
  • May 12, 2011 - Breaking News! This has been feared for a while, but now it is official. Star Fox 64 3D shall not, I repeat, shall NOT support online multiplayer features whatsoever. Like the original, the game will have a multiplayer mode all right, but unfortunately despite the Nintendo 3DS' advancement in online-capablities, you can only play this game against other players locally. The game still features Download Play, where people can play against anyone even if they do not own the game, similary to Star Fox Command. Additionally, players can take pictures of themselves for creating personal icons when pitting against other. Furthermore, the game includes two single modes: The 3DS mode, and a classic mode. In the former, you can use the gyroscope features to control the game, whilst the latter can be controlled the old-fashioned way, of course. Source
  • April 25, 2011 - Amongst all the hustle and bustle of on-going rumors about Nintendo's next console, dubbed Project Café, the mother company in Japan had confirmed that they will unveil their next console during the coming E3 2011 event, and it will also be playable. In other news, Shigeru Miyamoto was in a press event in France lately, and he revealled some new details about Star Fox 64 3D: In addition to the fact that the game's development had long been completed, the game will apparently take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS' gyroscope capability, apparently giving "a new dimension to the game."
  • April 14, 2011 - This just in! Nintendo Co., Ltd. (as in Nintendo in Japan) had launched their official website for Star Fox 64 3D, unveiling the game's final logo and Japanese release date - July 14, 2011! At this rate, a localized release of Star Fox 64 3D would not be far off from that date. There is not much to the page at the moment, but take a look and you shall be immersed into a very familiar introduction sequence.
  • March 27, 2011 - The Nintendo 3DS has been officially launched in North America today. Australians should be expecting their own launch day in the last day of March, and by then Nintendo would be done with the distribution of its latest console in the key markets. For now, we are anticipating the coming of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) by mid-June, hopefully there should be a lot to look forward to, including release details for Star Fox 64 3D, and any other possible Star Fox games, most likely for the Wii.
  • March 25, 2011 - The Nintendo 3DS has been officially launched in Europe today. Nintendo's newest handheld system will also see its official North American release in the day after tomorrow. The system's only-announced Star Fox game - Star Fox 64 3D - has yet to have a determined release date anywhere. There has been hints, however, that some Star Fox-based components (such as Fox's ears and headset) can be used on 3DS Mii characters, and can be obtained via StreetPass Mii Plaza.
  • January 5, 2011 - Starfox-Online.net has reported on a Star Fox movie in the possible works. It should be noted that this is NOT an official confirmation, just a film proposal.
  • At Nintendo Conference 2010, many new details were unveiled about the Nintendo 3DS, including its Japanese release date and price. Additionally, four brand new screenshots were released for Star Fox 64 3D.
  • Star Fox 64 is hitting the 3DS! Check out the story!
