(Now, I don't see why we need to have TV Tropes links everywhere, but there could be something from the policies I missed, so please let me know if that's the case. To decrease the copypaste nature, it might be good to separate characters by game instead.)

'''''Super Smash Bros.''''' (known in Japan as '''''Dairantō Smash Brothers''''') is a crossover fighting game franchise created by [[SmashWiki:Masahiro Sakurai|Masahiro Sakurai]] and published by Nintendo, featuring a plethora of characters across various different Nintendo franchises, as well as third-party material in later games.
==Description==
The ''Super Smash Bros.'' franchise first began development in the late 90s under the name ''[[SmashWiki:Dragon King: The Fighting Game|Dragon King: The Fighting Game]]''. The main purpose behind creating the game was to make use of the joystick on the Nintendo 64 controller, as Masahiro Sakurai was curious about how it would work in a multiplayer environment. Additionally, Sakurai wanted to create a game involving four fighters, as opposed to the traditional gameplay seen in games such as ''Street Fighter''. However, during preliminary development, Sakurai felt it was missing the correct atmosphere for home consoles, stating that the characters he had planned for inclusion in the game seemed too similar to one another; while he thought this would be acceptable in an arcade setting, he felt that games for home consoles would need better depth in order to captivate its audience. The project was then retooled to contain fighters from Nintendo products instead, and was then rebranded as ''Super Smash Bros.'', becoming an unexpected hit, with three sequels arriving over the next decade.

==Introduction to the series==
{{article-copied-from-another-wiki|date=February 2013}}
The Super Smash Bros. series was named after its first game, Super Smash Bros. for the N64.  At heart, it's a fighting game, but has cartoonish physics and a party atmosphere, rendering it more like "Street Fighter meets Mario Party".  The game series features an easy-to-understand control system for all characters' movesets, which makes it ideal for long-time fighting game fans, and for first-time players.
==Characters==
The character roster greatly varies from game to game, but what all games have in common is the vast majority of playable characters across different Nintendo franchises. Starting in ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', the franchise began including third-party characters starting with Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Konami's Solid Snake. ''Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U'' went on to introduce DLC characters, beginning with Mewtwo in 2015 and ending with Corrin and Bayonetta in 2016.

===Non-playable characters===
The following characters are non-playable characters, unless using a cheat cartridge, that appear only in the various Single Player modes throughout the series, controlled by the computer. Most of the non-playable characters were created for use in the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series although some of them, such as Goombas, come from other game franchises.

Template:SeriesInfoBox Super Smash Bros. (known in Japan as Dairantō Smash Brothers) is a crossover fighting game franchise created by Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo, featuring a plethora of characters across various different Nintendo franchises, as well as third-party material in later games.

Description

The Super Smash Bros. franchise first began development in the late 90s under the name Dragon King: The Fighting Game. The main purpose behind creating the game was to make use of the joystick on the Nintendo 64 controller, as Masahiro Sakurai was curious about how it would work in a multiplayer environment. Additionally, Sakurai wanted to create a game involving four fighters, as opposed to the traditional gameplay seen in games such as Street Fighter. The project was then retooled to contain fighters from Nintendo products instead, and was then rebranded as Super Smash Bros., becoming an unexpected hit, with three sequels arriving over the next decade.
