The amiibo logo.

amiibo are a line of collectible and interactive figurines used for Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch systems. When an amiibo is scanned using its near field communication technology when playing a compatible game, players can receive varying bonuses depending on the game and the amiibo used. amiibo can be scanned on the Wii U using the game pad, while the New 3DS scans them through the touch screen. However, older 3DS models require an extra accessory in order to be used. While Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were the first games to introduce amiibo functionality, similar technology was used prior to that for Pokémon Rumble U.

Trivia

  • During the development of Star Fox Zero, an Arwing amiibo with the capability of transforming into the Walker was intended to be released alongside it. However, it was cancelled after reaching the prototype stage. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the reason for this was because Nintendo couldn't make it into a product that would meet child safety standards.[2]
