:It would make the Main Page look nicer, and showcase the best images on the wiki, hopefully encouraging people to contribute. Personally, I feel that one desired effect would be that no matter how good the image shown is, there'll be someone visiting who'll think, 'Hey, I've got a better image of (for example) Fox than that', and they will start uploading images and adding them to pages, in the hope that one of them will someday greet users on the Main Page.
