Aparoids are large, parasitic creatures that appear as the main enemies of Star Fox: Assault. They are dark purple cyborgs, as they have the attributes of insects and machines. Aparoids originate from a planet simply known as the Aparoid Homeworld. The entire species is networked together and ruled over by the Aparoid Queen, who controls all the Aparoids from their homeworld.

Summary

Aparoids have the ability to infect both organisms and machines, by assimilating their genetic structure into the character, a process which is known as Aparoideation. Aparoids are responsible for the assimilation of Pigma Dengar and large attacks on several planets, including Corneria. Despite not possessing any conventional technology, the Aparoids are capable of traversing interstellar space by some manner of teleportation. Due to them being part machine, aparoids can have programs executed within them. The larger aparoids contain a Core Memory, which contains instructions and information for contacting the Aparoid Homeworld.

Pigma was the first character to become infected by aparoids after he stole a Core Memory from Fox McCloud. The infection caused Pigma to meld with a machine in the Asteroid Belt, where he is fought as the end boss. The aparoids also tried to infect General Pepper after infecting his flagship. They were ultimately destroyed by Star Fox by using an apoptosis program coded by Beltino Toad.

Inspiration

The Aparoids appear to have been inspired by insectoid and artificial extraterrestrial species from a number of science fiction franchises. The most obvious of which seem to be the Bugs from Starship Troopers. The 'soldier class' of the Aparoid species, who make up the backbone of the Aparoid invasion, are in themselves quite similar to the basic Starship Troopers soldier bugs. Like them, Aparoid soldiers are present on the battlefield in great numbers and their tactics comprise of basically just swarming the player. The Aparoid species are directed telepathically by the Queen in much of the same way the Bugs are directed by the Brain Bug in the first Starship Troopers movie.

Higher orders of the Aparoid species exhibit behavior that is closely reminiscent of the Borg from Star Trek. They are able to infest biological and non-biological entities (such as computers), as in the missions that take place on Corneria, where a number of Cornerian military personnel actively fight against the player, apparently having been telepathically or otherwise controlled by the Aparoids. General Pepper and his fighter is similarly turned against the player. Pigma Dengar is himself assimilated into a huge, cube-like space station which resembles a Borg Cube. On Fichina, the Aparoids take control of an atmospheric control center and reprogram the defense drones there to fight Fox and his allies. The Aparoids are also said to have been inspired by a raid of some bees, wasps and/or flies during development.

NTSC-U: The boss from the first mission in Star Fox: Assault. This aparoid shows up while Oikonny is singing his own praises, easily knocking Andross's nephew out of the sky. This same creature, its wings making it resemble a butterfly, apparently attacked a Cornerian fleet 17 years earlier.
PAL: While Fox and Oikonny are busy having a long-fated showdown in the first mission of Star Fox: Assault, this metallic moth-like foe known as an aparoid interrupts, taking out Oikonny in no time flat. Apparently, the same foe also destroyed an entire fleet on its own 17 years earlier. Luckily, Fox is able to expose its weakness and beat it.
