Main Page Layout

So the main page layout is going to change (because we need to have stuff about the wiki and not just words :P) but I SUUUUCK at organizing. Here's what I was thinking:

  1. Featured article
  2. Featured picture
  3. News

Not sure what else, but those are a few to start. Anyone have any ideas?Neo 00:36, 7 August 2010 (PDT)

How about a 'did you know' section? Random pointless facts about the Star Fox series, such as how we across the pond got Starwing instead of Star Fox. Although there's one of those sections everywhere, and you might want something unique. Moydow 10:55, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
Good idea! ZW and WK have "did you know?" sections, and I always liked the idea. I'll definitely include that one in the list.—Justin(Talk) 11:57, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
What would be the purpose in a "Featured Picture area"? [Tacopill|(talk)] 12:44, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
It would make the Main Page look nicer, and showcase the best images on the wiki, hopefully encouraging people to contribute. Personally, I feel that one desired effect would be that no matter how good the image shown is, there'll be someone visiting who'll think, 'Hey, I've got a better image of (for example) Fox than that', and they will start uploading images and adding them to pages, in the hope that one of them will someday greet users on the Main Page. Moydow 13:04, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
I can see it encouraging people to contribute better images, but i don't see how it would encourage contributions overall. I am also at a loss on how it makes the main page look better, but i've done enough debating over design for one week. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:10, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
I guess whether or not it improves appearance is more of a personal opinion. Moydow 13:17, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
Sorry; i think i'm overreacting and/or being paranoid about somethings, and it is affecting my writing. It is my opinion that it doesn't help, but that shouldn't stop anyone from suggesting it as an idea. ;_; .....(for an example of me doing this previously, see this link) [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:22, 7 August 2010 (PDT)

Featured content is supposed to showcase the wiki's best works. The best articles and the best images. And thanks to our working system of music, I'm also planning on making a featured music section. It's gonna be fun on the bun!—Justin(Talk) 05:26, 27 August 2010 (PDT)

Sweet, i like the featured music section..... :D. [Tacopill|(talk)] 07:25, 27 August 2010 (PDT).
Roundycorners. Roundycorners everywhere.
Also, a skin that screams "StarFox". Space theme! TTEchidna 18:23, 27 August 2010 (PDT)
Steve is working on the Skin, and i am working on getting things....roundy....Template:Tl [Tacopill|(talk)] 18:30, 27 August 2010 (PDT).
So, how about this:

Welcome to Lylat Wiki

Header (upper section)

News (Say, Star Fox News) Featured Content (say, Articles)
News (Site News?) Featured Content (Images)
News (NIWA News) Featured Content (Music)
Other Info (lower section)
NIWA Blurbs about Niwas, Affiliates, etc.
Core Pages? Links to the Character Page or Category
External Links, Affiliates, etc. stuff!
In this design, you have the two sections, "Upper" and "Lower". The "Upper" section fits news on the left and featured content on the right. the "lower" section fits other things. Color choices are optional....[Tacopill|(talk)] 18:49, 30 August 2010 (PDT).

Please note: this conversation is currently closed as it no longer fully reflects consensus of how the main page would be designed (although it does reflect some of it). If you would like to comment on the current main page, propose changes to it, etc. Please start it in a new topic. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:41, 19 October 2010 (PDT).

News

Does anyone else think that the news template should be moved to the upper-left corner of the main page? In my mind, the news is something always looked for first on a main page. Also, is there any news on a possible new skin to cover the plain white background?--TW 18:29, 6 January 2011 (PST)

I intend on Asking the person who did GSU's skin for help on a new skin. As for the main page, i will contact the designer when i am next able. [Tacopill|(talk)] 19:17, 7 January 2011 (PST).
I'll be fixing up the main page, will probably start on it tomorrow :J As for the skin, that's something I can't doMalake256 19:27, 7 January 2011 (PST)
TW, do you have any ideas of you would want in the skin? [Tacopill|(talk)] 11:13, 8 January 2011 (PST).
I don't know if it would work, but what about this image? Look at Pikipedia for an example of what I mean.
AssaultSoundtrackCover.png
--TW 15:20, 8 January 2011 (PST)
Yea, i think that would work well. I am going to start putting together ideas of possible looks for the Wiki Skin. I hope to have some ideas by the next weekend. [Tacopill|(talk)] 22:19, 8 January 2011 (PST).
Has there been any develeopment on this? Also, do we really need the external links? Most of those sites are long dead and it doesn't really fit in with the page. At the very least, can we cut the defunct sites?--TW 15:24, 30 April 2011 (PDT)
We can remove the dead links; but as for progress.... i don't think anything has happened with this so far.... :( . 21:26, 30 April 2011 (PDT).
Ok, i just tried out the image.... and it made the content text rather hard to read. Do you know of anyway to fade the image, so it is less somewhat transparent? 09:30, 1 May 2011 (PDT).
Both ZeldaWiki and Metroid Wiki use a white font as the default instead of the standard black font. Other than that, perhaps someone on the NIWA forums could help. I'll look for a backup just incase.--TW 18:39, 1 May 2011 (PDT)
EDIT:If this doesn't work, perhaps we could go like Wikibound and use a custom piece of art. Maybe we could host somekind of contest where the winning design would become the new skin. Just as a kind of last resort.--TW 19:50, 1 May 2011 (PDT)
Given the options, i think i might actually prefer a custom piece of art. .... By chance, are you an artist? [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:55, 4 May 2011 (PDT).
I'm no artist. My suggestion is that we use the example image and white text for a week. We can also ask others on the NIWA forums if they have any advice. If it doesn't work out, we'll look at other images to see what works. If nothing else works, we'll hold an art contest. As to the rules, we'll cross that bridge when and if we need to.--— T W 18:08, 4 May 2011 (PDT)

Yea. I think we may need to go to the forums on this. But anyway, i added this idea to the improving the wiki page, since, in my mind it is an improvement on the wiki.  :). [Tacopill|(talk)] 14:37, 7 May 2011 (PDT).

Most wanted

Can we put up a section for most wanted pages, like Aparoid Homeworld, has 47 dead links leading to it. And also, just saying, we have dozens of dead templates, not existing, yet having up to 70 links. Foxdude54 09:08, 30 April 2011 (PDT)

Yea. I think we can do that. And i am looking into a way to filter wanted pages by namespace (unless there are templates you think we wouldn't need). [Tacopill|(talk)] 14:38, 30 April 2011 (PDT).
Ok, i have added the wanted pages list, along with about 30 other possible lists of stuff that needs working on in the wiki. Please tell me if you like them. If not, i can always change it again. 21:20, 30 April 2011 (PDT).
Thank you, they look amazing, I couldn't do a better job myself (mostly because I don't know code) Foxdude54 17:32, 1 May 2011 (PDT)
You're Welcome and Thank you. I could teach you some of the code, just email me like usual :). Heck, in order to do some of that, i looked up how to use Dynamic Page Lists... which turned out to be fun. :). [Tacopill|(talk)] 15:16, 4 May 2011 (PDT).

To all staff

I received a very interesting email, and I wanted to share it with you so you could all discuss it. You all should know my email address, so each of you just send me an email just to say that you need the message.—Justin(Talk) 01:02, 6 May 2011 (PDT)

Advertisements

Hello, faithful editors! I was approached by a company known as GamerDNA Media. They want to put advertisements on Lylat Wiki and split the profit, something that would help this site pay for itself. However, I would never agree to this without first receiving the consent of the users. Tell me your thoughts, opinions, etc. And rest assured that I will respect the majority decision. This wiki belongs to you, the editors, and if you decide against this, I will respect that. Please tell me your thoughts on this.—Justin(Talk) 13:03, 26 May 2011 (PDT)

I would be fine with it. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:16, 26 May 2011 (PDT).
I would be fine with this as well.--— T W 16:54, 26 May 2011 (PDT)
Hey, we gotta be supported somehow, so, ok. Foxdude54 17:01, 26 May 2011 (PDT)
Eh, it's fine by me. I'm good. I'm good. --AnyGuy 21:24, 27 May 2011 (PDT)
So, are we gonna allow advertisements or what? --AnyGuy 18:14, 7 August 2011 (PDT)
Looks like the consensus is for it.... But Neo is highly busy with Really life stuff, so he probably hasn't checked here in a wile. [Tacopill|(talk)] 07:25, 9 August 2011 (PDT).
I don't mind having ads if it would help us support the site, but I do have a fear. Would the ad banners be as annoying as the ones displayed on Bulbapedia? --Hope(N Forever) 09:42, 17 August 2011 (PDT)
I think that would be up to them and Justin.
If it is relevent, They're one of the groups that advertise on StrategyWiki. Is there placement better for you then Bulbapedia's?
[Tacopill|(talk)] 16:39, 17 August 2011 (PDT).
NO WAY! The whole point is to create a clean enviornment for learning only, not just to make a few cheep bucks. And who says it's going to end at GamerDNA? Yeah, that's what I thought. P.S: I know my cause is done for, but at least ask for more than half.
It's not necessarily a matter Neo earning a few cheap bucks. It's to help him cover server costs, as renting webspace can be expensive.
Also, please don't ask a question, then answer it yourself. It's quite annoying. [Tacopill|(talk)] 13:29, 4 October 2011 (PDT).

Hi. I volunteer to help out with the Featured Article system if no one else wants to, I'm good at updating things on time. --Lyphoria 16:44, 8 December 2011 (PST)
